Australian livestock are raised with minimal use of antibiotics
Antibiotics are usually only prescribed to treat illness.
If livestock are sick they can be prescribed antibiotics by a veterinarian.
The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) is the Australian Government regulator of agricultural and veterinary chemical products that determines which antibiotics are approved for use in animals and how they are used.
The Government’s National Residue Survey testing shows almost 100% compliance with Australian and export market requirements. In 2023, the result were 99.98% for beef, 99.91% for sheep and 98.52% for goat.
